Concentration risk: why one stock at 40% changes everything

October 14, 2026 · Educational, not financial advice

Key takeaways

  • Position size matters as much as position quality.
  • Different tickers can still be the same bet.
  • Check concentration by stock, sector and theme.

Imagine two investors who each own a stock that falls 50%. One had 5% of their money in it; the other had 40%. The first lost about 2.5% of their portfolio. The second lost about 20%. Same stock, very different outcome.

Hidden concentration

Owning ten names does not guarantee diversification if they are all in one sector, all driven by the same trend, or all funds holding the same large companies. Look through to what you own, not just how many tickers you have.

How to check

  • List positions by percentage of the total.
  • Group them by sector and theme.
  • Ask: if one thing goes wrong, how much of my portfolio does it touch?

There is no magic number

Some investors accept a large position deliberately and know the risk. The point is to choose it on purpose rather than discover it after a fall.

Growth makes concentration creep in: your best performer becomes your biggest risk without you buying a single share.
